Country starlet to chase city success

Fresh from victory at Bathurst, the Mat Rue trained Boulevardofdreams is preparing for a move to the metropolitan racing circuit.

The successful regional harness racing trainer / driver has made a move back to Canowindra with about 25 horses in work, and this four-year-old mare is shaping up as something special.

Returning from a spell to race at Bathurst, she ran a blistering 1.52.2 mile rate to win the Cobbitty Equine Pace at Bathurst with Jett Turnbull holding the reins.

“We bought her as a yearling and she’s been pretty sparingly raced,” Rue said.

“She’s had 16 starts and won six of them.”

Boulevardofdreams has been raced to a good grade her whole career, one of her wins in a Group 3 and placings in Group 1 races.

“She went a super fast time at Bathurst the other night … so she’s going to race at Menangle next Saturday,” Rue said.

“It’s just got to the time now where she’s going to have a period down there and reassess from there.”

Rue is keen to give her every opportunity, with Jett Turnbull to again take the reins as the mare begins her metropolitan campaign.

“She’s a pretty top class mare, she’s going somewhere,” Rue said.

“Especially down there at Menangle – I think she’ll really love the big track.

“They really get along quick down there which will suit her. She’s got really good high speed late.”

As always, though, there’s plenty of local tracks to be racing and this week Rue is heading for Forbes as the Forbes Diggers Harness Racing Club brings back its traditional ANZAC Day meeting.

Rue has qualified two pacers – Magic Matteo and Mclean – for the Palmer final with successful runs in the heats in Parkes last Friday night.

But he hopes to take a good number to Forbes for the day.

Rue has been a supporter of the Forbes club as they rebuild the track destroyed by the November 2022 flood events, lining up for the first trial they hosted two months ago.

“To be honest, they had it prepared so you could have held a race meeting that day,” he said, paying tribute to the club’s volunteers who have put countless hours into repairs and preparation for a great family day out.
